On leaving the historic city of Inverness, the route climbs steadily to the open moors of Strathspey. There is a traffic-free section across the Drumochter Pass, the route then descends to the wooded hillsides and rich farmlands of Perthshire and Stirlingshire. The route takes in the lochs of Tay, Earn, Lubnaig and Venachar then crosses the Queen Elizabeth Foerset Park to reach the outskirts of Glasgow at Loch Lomond.
