Jarrold Pathfinder 44 - Essex

ISBN: 0-7117-1594-7

In general the Essex landscape is gently undulating, rather than flat, with the hilliest country is in the north and west, near the Herfordshire and Cambridgeshire borders. Although the county suffers from the same population and traffic pressures as the other Home Counties, there is still plenty of open, unspoilt countryside. On the marshes of Essex, for example, there is a genuine feeling of solitude that is hard to find anywhere else in southern England.

The county is also interesting from a historical point of view. Colchester, the oldest recorded town in Britain, is featured in one of the walks, and there are routes through Epping and Hatfield forests, which contain some of the finest surviving fragments of England's medieval forests.

The Essex-Suffolk border is Constable Country, and walkers are guided through Dedham Vale, passing Flatford Mill and Willy Lott's Cottage. There are also routes to Waltham Abbey, alleged burial place of King Harold, and Mersea Island, in the estuaries of the Blackwater and the Colne.
