Jarrold Pathfinder 38 - Ceredigion

ISBN: 0-7117-2418-0

Ceredigion holds a unique position in the history and culture of Wales. It has also undergone something of an identity crisis, having been a recognised unit since the fifth century, in 1536 it transformed into Cardiganshire. Later the county became Dyfed, but between 1974 and 1996, symptomatic of the Welshness of the region, the historical name Ceredigion was revived by the district council and the name Ceredigion County Council by the new unitary authority in 1996. The region of Ceredigion is named after Ceredig, the son of the fifth-century Celtic leader Cunndda, who was the leader of the northern British tribe that recaptured this area from the Irish invaders.

The present-day county stretches from Eglwys-fach in the north to Cardigan in the south, and its main towns are Aberystwyth, Aberaeron, Lampeter, Tregaron, Llandysul and Cardigan, The coastal towns and villages provide excellent bases for exploration on foot, from Aberporth to Tresaith (a tiny place that many people overlook) to the long, sandy beach at Penbryn backed by sand dunes and woodland trails and Llangrannog, where a spectacular walk along the cliffs leads to the National Trust promontory at Ynys Lochtyn, and the popular traditional resort at New Quay, where the most renowned Welsh poet Dylan Thomas moved to in 1944 to escape the London blitz.

Both on the coast and inland there is opportunity for really excellent and largely undiscovered walking.
