Jarrold Pathfinder 23 - Loch Lomond & The Trossachs

ISBN: 0-7117-2225-0

Walking in Scotland is quite different from walking south of the border. In England there are only eight summits that top 3000 ft (914m), while in Scotland there are 277, with 45 of them situated in the Southern Highlands. Locally these are known as 'Munros', named after the 19th-century climber who first listed them. Now it is a popular pursuit to try to 'bag' them. Lesser known are the 'Corbetts' between 2500 ft and 3000 ft (762-914m). The most demanding walk in this guide features a ridge walk with a total ascent in excess of 5000 ft (1500m).

The Trossachs (featured in walks around Ben Ledi, Stronachlachar and lochs Katrine and Arklet) are particularly spectacular when clothed in autumn colours and provided the setting for The Lady of the Lake and Rob Roy, by Sir Walter Scott. The Ochil Hills, Loch Lomond and the West Highland Way are also included, and there is an opportunity to see Stirling and the Wallace monument, overlooking the scene of the Scottish patriot's victory over Edward I.
