Jarrold Short Walks 4 - Cotswolds

ISBN: 0-7117-1602-1 The Cotswolds extend from near Stratford-upon-Avon in the north to Wotton-under-Edge, near Bath, in the South. The name 'Cotswold' has a cosy ring to it-bringing to mind traditionally English images of cottages, lush green fields and rolling hills. It derives from the Saxon, meaning wooded hollows hidden amid gentle hills, which is still an accurate description today, 1,200 years later.

The Cotswold landscape and its buildings owe everything to the underlying bedrock. Honey-coloured limestone characterises the region's picturesque churches and cottages, many of which can be seen on these walks, including picture-book Bourton-on-the-Water, Upper and Lower Slaughter, Bibury, Burford and Minchinhampton. There are also opportunities for walkers to visit Cleeve Hill, the Cotswolds' highest viewpoint; the historic market town of Cirencester; one of Britain's best preserved Roman villas near Chedworth; historic Hailes Abbey and Snowshill Manor; and one of Britain's most notable arboretums at Batsford.
