Popular Walks around Tintern

This booklet describes six enjoyable circular walks of varying length in the wooded countryside which surrounds Tintern village. Each walk provides splendid views and enables visitors to appreciate the same countryside which first attracted fashionable 'Wye tourists' in the 18th century. Many writers and artists sought out picturesque landscapes and in 1797 William Wordsworth, who loved the area, wrote his evocative poem 'Lines composed a few miles above Tintern Abbey' while staying in the valley.

All walks are suitable for reasonably fit walkers, but some are more energetic than others. As a rough guide the walks are graded from strenuous to easy.

The most useful map for walking in the lower Wye valley is the double sided OS Explorer 14 - Wye Valley and Forest of Dean.
