A county of England, bounded on the N. W. by the Bristol Channel; on the N. by Gloucestershire, from which it is divided by the Avon; on the E. by Wiltshire; and on the S.E. by Dorsetshire; and on the S. W. by Devonshire. Its length, from N. E. to S. W. is about 65 miles, and its breadth from E. to W. between 30 and 40 . It is divided into 40 hundreds, which contain 3 cities, 33 market towns, 482 parishes, about 56,000 houses, and 350,000 inhabitants. The air, in the lower grounds, is universally mild, and generally wholesome.........
