OS Aerial Photograph Information Sheet

Ordnance Survey have for many decades been capturing high quality vertical images of the changing landscape to support its mapping programs and it is from this substantial archive that their monochrome contact prints are offered.

What is a contact print?

Contact prints are reproduced directly from the negative, resulting in a high quality image. For mapping purposes, photos significantly overlap and as such a property may appear on several photos on a flight path of which the most central will be recommended.

What is available?

For any given location in Great Britain, there is often a photo available for each decade between 1980 and 2000. However, remote locations such as the Scottish Highlands may have been photographed far less regularly as a lack of change has meant maps remain up to date for longer. Scale and thus coverage also varies from place to place with urban areas generally having photos taken closest to the ground and starting from up to 1:5000 scale.

How do I buy?

Simply provide the required location and we will consult the relevant flight diagrams to identify appropriate photos together with their date, scale and coverage. This is usually done within one business day after which we will provide you with a list of available prints.

On indentifying the appropriate photo, we will request a fresh print be created from the original contact print and this will usually be despatched within 2 weeks. If we do not have a suitable print available, we will cancel the order for you.
