Ordnance Survey Licences Explained
The two different licences explained in this guide are: • Plan Design and Build • Internal Business Use
Key features of the Plan, Design and Build Licence
• Data sharing between original purchaser and other project participants allowed. • Choice of licence period – 12 months minimum, 18 months, 24 months or 30 months. • Right to archive for up to 13 years for legal or regulatory reasons after the licence has ended, for looking at the information to answer queries arising on the specific project in that period. • Right for original purchaser to use in ‘land and property’ projects. • Purchaser must provide project name when they purchase this licence. • Use of the data on up to a maximum of 40 terminals per project is permitted. • Upper limit of 6 sq km on the amount of geographic data that can be licensed. • No rights to commercially exploit the data in any way. • Purchaser can appoint subcontractors to undertake work on their behalf, that is viewed as a temporary extension of their project skill base. • Unlimited production of paper copies from data for use within the specified project allowed. • Production of reports for project client allowed. • Royalty tariff higher than for IBU 12-month licence.
The key features of the Internal Business Use Licence
• Purchaser can use the data as a tool in the administration of their day-to-day business. • Right to use the mapping and data as widely within the purchaser’s business as they choose. • Purchaser cannot share Ordnance Survey data with other organisations. • The licence is valid for one year from date of licensing. • Purchaser has no right to use the data for any purpose after one year. • Further use only allowed if licensed data is repurchased at the end of the licence period. • No right to archive for whatever reason beyond the term of the licence. • No limit on the area of data that can be licensed. • No rights to commercially exploit the data in any way. • Purchaser can appoint subcontractors to undertake work on their behalf, that is viewed as a temporary extension of their internal use. • Unlimited production of paper copies from data is allowed, during the lifetime of the licence. • Production of reports for clients allowed. • Use to meet a statutory obligation allowed. • Limited rights granted to publish Ordnance Survey data for ‘display and promotion’. • Use of Ordnance Survey trademarks or closely similar names to Ordnance Survey trademarks not permitted.
