Earthquake teaching resource

At approximately 1am 27th February 2008 a significant tremor was felt across the Midlands. BGS have confirmed that this was an Earthquake and the Epicentre was near Market Rasen in Lincolnshire.

• Earthquakes are caused by plate tectonics.
• The Earth is made up of a solid core, a semi molten mantle and a thin crust.
• The thin crust is made up of several plates which move around due to convection currents which circulate within the semi-molten mantle.
• It is the movement of these plates which cause Earthquake tremors.
• The area where an earthquake originates is called the hypocentre or focus.
• The place directly above the hypocentre on the Earths surface is called the epicentre.
• The Epicentre in this instance was near Market Rasen.
